Your donation for our Hornbills is greatly appreciated and used to cover our project costs. Our rescue and rehab centers are our biggest cost to bear each year since 1999. We pay the food & medicine for the animals, the salaries of the caretakers & our vet and in some centers the fees for the porters. Our local coworkers, benefit from a reasonable salary and health insurance, but we are keeping our costs as low as possible. Have a look to see our financial needs here. We also have a lot of coworkers in the Philippines and abroad (Germany), doing unpaid volunteer work.

- THE WALDENS HORNBILL

This Valentines day we are highlighting one of our most loving species the Walden’s Hornbill. This is because they are a rarity among species in the world as they mate for life.

When two single birds lock eyes and imprint on each other for the first time, they form a connection. This loving bond is what will shape their future together. The husband strengthens this will small gifts of affection, donations of food like fruits and nuts. Before they finally agree to be together for the rest of their lives. They then hunt the forest for a free nesting tree they can build a home in.

These love birds build a home together in the cavity of trees where the mother lays her eggs and raises their chicks. The couple closes the cavity together, trapping the mother in with her children. The mother and hatchlings can stay in the tree for up to 105 days until the chicks are ready to fly, the mother never leaving their side. They leave a hole in the cavity to only allow the male to deliver food for their family while providing protection from predators. When the first fledgling is ready to fly the nest, the home is reopened. The couple is reunited in watching their chicks leave the nest, happy in the life they have crated for themselves.
