Reforestation

Reforestation

Our reforestation program includes tree seedling nurseries for rearing native tree species, well-protected against birds. This program, besides options for reforestation with native species, provides an income for local people by the sale of seedlings for reforesting other regions.

our aim

Slash-and-burn farming has led to parts of the Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park becoming grassland. To redeem the degradation, reforestation of the grasslands with native species is aimed.

Vast areas of Panay are degraded to cogon prairies which are burned every dry season to provide fresh grass to a handful of cattle at most. Additional trees are felled for charcoaling. Reforestation of these areas for agroforestry and conservation purposes will benefit both wildlife and local residents by providing long lost forest products (e. g. rattan), wildlife corridors, watershed, and typhoon resilience. It will also help to preserve the genetic diversity of forest plants.

Our Activities

Reforestation is achieved by breeding native species in tree nurseries, which are then transplanted into the wild to restore the rainforest.

Our reforestation program includes tree seedling nurseries (well-protected against birds) for rearing native tree species. This program, besides its own reforestation efforts with native species, provides an income for local people by means of selling off seedlings to other locals interested in the reforestation of their regions.

project costs

Aside from the construction of nurseries, the project does only need caretakers which receive about 50 USD per month.

Project duration

This project is ongoing indefinitely.
